The CalWood fire in Boulder County has grown to at least 8,788 acres, or about 13 square miles, according to a map published Sunday by the Boulder County Emergency Operations Center.

A map updated as of 9 a.m. Sunday showing the CalWood fire evacuation zones (in red), pre-evacuation zones (in yellow) and closed roads, as well as the footprint of the fire itself which is currently at 8,788 acres.

The explosive fire started Saturday and within hours grew to more than 5,000 acres as it burned between Jamestown and Lyons, forcing evacuations for nearly 3,000 residents in the immediate area as the smoke plume billowed over the Front Range.

On Sunday, spokeswoman Jennifer Bray said relatively humid weather conditions are expected to help fire crews as they attack the blaze, which is 5% contained.

“Everyone is thrilled with the weather this morning,” she said. “And hoping that will be a big help in their efforts today.”

She said there were no changes in the evacuation orders from Saturday night, and said that the evacuation points that closed overnight have reopened, including both Boulder County’s North Broadway Complex at 3460 N. Broadway, and, for livestock, the Boulder County Fairgrounds at 9595 Nelson Road in Longmont.

Authorities said Saturday that they believe some structures have been destroyed in the blaze but there was no immediate estimate on how many buildings burned.
